PepLink configuration questions
01. PepLink Configuration Questions 02. Can't Connect to the Internet 01. PepLink Configuration Questions Use this page to troubleshoot a PepLink modem / adapter. Below are images of a PepLink and information to check and troubleshoot. ![]() The front: power, status, and Wi-Fi LED lights and Four LAN LED lights. ![]() The Back: antenna connector, reset button, serial port, four Ethernet ports, and power. ![]() The label on the bottom incorrectly displays the MAC address. To find the correct MAC address refer to the debug section below (section vi). 1. Check PepLink status LEDs, is POWER green? If yes, go to step 2. If not: a. Verify the power cord is plugged in correctly on both ends. b. Verify that the outlet has AC power. c. If power can not be established, replace CPE. 2. Check PepLink status LEDs, is one of the LAN LEDs green? The LAN LED should correspond to the port connected by Ethernet cable to should be green. If yes, go to step 3. If not: a. Verify the Ethernet cable is plugged in correctly on both ends. b. Plug in to a different Ethernet port on the PepLink. c. If possible, replace Ethernet cable (straight-through). d. Verify the Ethernet card/port is enabled (Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet, Network Connections, Local Area Connection). e. Try power cycling the PC and PepLink. f. After you verify the Ethernet port and cable is functioning properly, but still no LAN LED on the PepLink contact MetroFi customer support. 3. Confirm that the PepLink Ethernet is plugged into the PC and not going through a router or switch. If not: a. Establish a direct connect to the PepLink and PC with straight through Ethernet cable. b. Proceed to step 6. 4. Check customer's PC to see if an IP address has been assigned by the PepLink. Using IPCONFIG or equivalent (Start, Run, cmd, ipconfig). You should see: ![]() If not: a. Verify the PC is set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' from a DHCP server (Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet, Network Connections, Local Area Connection, Properties, Internet Protocol [TCP/IP], Properties). b. Release and renew the IP address and see if the correct IP address appears (Start, Run, cmd, 'ipconfig/release', 'ipconfig/renew') c. Try power cycling the PC and the PepLink 5. Try to PING the PepLink from the PC. (Start, Run, cmd, 'ping 192.168.20.1' ). If yes, go to step 6 If not: a. Try power cycling the PC and the PepLink b. Ensure no firewall software is blocking access to the 192.168.20.1 IP address 6. Try to establish a browser session to the PepLink GUI from the PC. Enter http://192.168.20.1 into the PC web browser address bar. « back to top 02. Can't Connect to the Internet The PepLink will attempt to get an IP address via DHCP from the neighborhood access point. When IP address assignment is successful, the third box on the PepLink GUI turns green and a connection is established to the Internet. If this fails then please try the following: a. Access the PepLink GUI CPE Setup page via http://192.168.20.1 to ensure the correct SSID (MetroFi-Free or MetroFi-Free-Beta) is configured. If not, enter the correct SSID and attempt to connect again. To get into the PepLink GUI do the following. i. The 'try again' button should appear if connection failed. Scroll to the right on browser to see the try again button if you can't see it. Click try again. Move to next step. ![]() ii. Put in metrofi/metrofi for username/password (any character will do for free service). Click on the 'Advanced Config' button. Proceed to next step. ![]() iii. A username/password dialog box appears. Enter Latham2465 for the username. A capital "L" is needed, and it is all one-word without any spaces. Enter peplink, all lowercase for the password. It would be a good point in time to write this information down on a sticky note and write the IP address, 192.168.20.1, the username, Latham2465, and password, peplink down and tape it to the top of the PepLink for future reference. Click okay. If this prompt appears again after clicking okay, make sure the caps lock is not enabled and a capital"L" is used. ![]() iv. On the CPE Setup page (see below), check and make sure SSID is set to MetroFi-Free. With a capital M, F, F with the hyphen (a.k.a. dash). If it is not exactly typed in as MetroFi-Free then you will be unable to connect. One reason this SSID changes is if the reset button on the back PepLink is pressed with a paperclip. To correctly reset hold the reset button for 10 seconds. If the reset button has been pressed the PepLink reverts back to the default SSID. Refer back to point (iii) above about writing the information down incase a reset has been done, and continue below. Enter in the proper SSID, and click the save button. Click the 'connect' link at top to try and connect. If it fails, repeat steps 1-4, and click on Debug link, and proceed to point (v) below. ![]() v. Click on Debug. We want to do this for two reasons. One - To confirm that a MetroFi access point is seen from the PepLink. Two - To get the MAC address of the PepLink to verify that the PepLink on specific MetroFi access point is connected. Below are definitions of what you will see in the Debug top section shown below. * Firmware Version and Wi-Fi Card: ignore this. * Scanned devices: This shows all access points that the PepLink sees. - Each access point (MetroFi's and your neighbor's) will be listed as a "Device XX" and with a MAC address (This should correlate to the neighborhood access point normally connected) - ESSID is the access point SSID (i.e. MetroFi-Free) - Signal level should be above -85dBm (the closer to zero the better) Scroll down the scanned devices and to determine what access points "ESSIDs" the PepLink can see. "MetroFi-Free" should be listed. If it is note the MAC address and signal level. Proceed to the point (vi) below. If not: a. Hit refresh on the browser and scroll through list of scanned devices again b. Make sure the PepLink is setup correctly. * antenna is screwed on * outdoor antenna is connected correctly with RF cable ![]() vi. If you keep scrolling down you will hit Wi-Fi card setting and Wan Status. *Wi-Fi Card Settings: This is the information typed in on the CPE setup page. If you make a change on the CPE setup page it should be reflected in this area. You can confirm that the ESSID is set to MetroFi-Free. If it is connected that also lets you see which MetroFi access point it is currently connected to based on the MAC address. Please take note of this MAC address to give to MetroFi customer service. * WAN Status: Locate the MAC address of the PepLink device. Please write the MAC address of the PepLink on sticky note in additional to the IP address, username, and password. (The MAC address stamped on the bottom of the radio is incorrect). ![]() Below is a blow-up of what each of the green-bars mean: ![]()
