802.1x 802.11 Association Authentication CPE DHCP Encryption MetroFi Access Point RSSI SSID WEP Wireless Modem WPA VPN 802.1x The newest authentication standard for wireless networks used to identify users prior to accessing a network. This standard requires users to enter a username and password authenticate on a wireless network. MetroFi is currently developing 802.1x wireless authentication for service areas. « back to top 802.11 One of many wireless standard created by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n are examples wireless local area network technology. 802.11 operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency (2.401 - 2.473). Each channel (1-11) operates on a specific frequency within the 2.4 GHz spectrum. « back to top Association Process of connecting an 802.11 wireless device to a specific wireless network name. When connecting to the MetroFi SSID (wireless network name) users are associating with "MetroFi-Free". « back to top Authentication The confirmation process for identifying a user. For authentication on the MetroFi wireless network, new users are directed to the registration page. An email address is required to start your wireless session. « back to top CPE (Consumer Premises Equipment) Refers to any equipment located in a consumer's home, such as a high powered wireless modem. « back to top DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) A set of rules used by a device (such as your computer or router) to request and obtain an Internet Protocal (IP) address from another device which has a list of addresses available for assignment. « back to top Encryption Encryption is the process of obscuring sensitive data such as passwords and credit card numbers into something unreadable without special knowledge. « back to top MetroFi Access Point Refers to the MetroFi wireless access points on utility poles and rooftops. Each access point has two antennas, and communicates with a user's Wi-Fi enabled device. The MetroFi wireless access points, using mesh technology, routes the signal to the Internet. « back to top RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) A measurement of the received radio signal strength. « back to top SSID An SSID is an network identifier for wireless networks. The SSID is usually broadcast from an access point and identifies which wireless networks are available. The SSID for the MetroFi Wi-Fi network is 'MetroFi-Free' (case-sensitive). « back to top WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) The first generation of wireless encryption protocol designed for wireless networks. Subsequent analysis has shown that it provides only a minimal level of security. MetroFi does not use WEP. « back to top Wireless Modem Refers to any device that can act like a bridge / repeater / adapter to communicate with a specific SSID. Examples of a wireless modems include the Ruckus, PepLink, Buffalo, and Hawking. « back to top WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) WPA is a second-generation wireless security and authentication protocol designed to overcome some of the limitations of WEP. « back to top VPN (Virtual Private Network) Is a private communications network, often used within a company that creates a secure connection tunnel for data traffic on a normally unsecure network. « back to top |
